30年ほど前だったろう、あるいは父が現在の僕ぐらいの年齢のころだったかもしれない、読書のほかに趣味のない父にハーモニカを贈ったことがある。尋常小学校か旧制中学校のとき、ハーモニカを吹いていた、という話を聞いたからだ。
父が遺した文庫本を整理しているとき、本箱の奥に隠すように置いてあったハーモニカを発見し、義母には何も言わずに持ち帰った。故人が吹いたことがあると思うと、懐かしいような不思議な感懐に包まれた。
ジャズハーモニカの奏者として著名な Toots Thieleman(1922-2016)の演奏を聴いていると、泪が滲んできた。ずっとその世界に浸っていたいと思った。Old Friend の歌詞の末尾にある Old friend, welcome back into my life again という一節のように、死んだ父があらためて僕の人生のなかに戻ってきたように感じた。
